Third Grade Reading

Dr. Seuss

August and September 2015

In reading, we will kick off the year learning several reading strategies that we will use all year long. These strategies include read the questions first, use elimination, and locate the answers in the reading passage. In addition, we will practice using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words. The main genres that we will begin with are fables and folktales. We will read and watch short clips of fables and folktales. Fables and folktales are a perfect way to introduce students to the five story elements of charater, setting, problem/conflict, theme, and plot. Once we read a fable or folktale in class, we will locate each of the five story elements and support how we know that based on information in the story. In addition we will look at illustrations in the fables and folktales and tell how the illustrations add to the story. Last we will work on reading fluency daily at school and as part of our quick homework. One of my very favorite fables is "The Lion and the Mouse".

The Common Core Standards Covered by this are as follows:

RL 3.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.

RL 3.2 Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral, and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text.

RL 3.3 Describe characters in a story (e.g. their traits, motivations or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.

RL3.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in text, distinguishing literal from nonliteral language.

RL 3.7 Explain how specific aspects of text's illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects ofa character or setting).

RL 3.9 Compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of stories written by the same author about the same or similar characters (e.g., in books from a series).

RL 3.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, at the high end of the grades 2-3 text complexity band independently and proficiently.
