Dear Russell County Schools Parents/Guardians:

I write to you today to make certain you are aware of a recent regulation enacted that reads in part “ensure parents, legal guardians, or other persons or agencies responsible for a student are aware of the requirement to notify the student’s school of a diagnosed medical condition that may threaten the safety of the student or others in the school…”

This emergency administrative regulation was created to establish actions that the Department for Public Health may take in response to a declared national or state emergency.  Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (the virus that causes COVID-19) is a highly infections virus that is communicable to both students and school personnel.  In order to minimize the spread of this virus in the school setting, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services developed this emergency administrative regulation.  Additionally, Russell County Board of Education Policy 09.213 already notes that parents are to inform the school when a student has any medical condition that threatens the safety of the student or others in the school.

What does this mean for parents/guardians?  You are required to report to the school when your child tests positive for COVID-19 or is quarantined due to potential exposure to COVID-19.
How do you report this?  We want to make the process simple for you and for many parents/guardians this will not be any different from what you currently do.  You can simply notify your child’s teacher of the diagnosis or quarantine requirement-as soon as possible.
What will my child’s teacher do with this information?  Your child’s teacher will report the information to me (School Superintendent), Patty Meece (Director of School Nursing), Cecilia Damron (Director of Pupil Personnel) and your child’s school principal.
What will the school/school district do with this information?  By regulation, we are required to enter the number of students or school personnel that are positive for COVID-19 or quarantined into an online portal and that information will be made publicly available.  ONLY numbers will be reported publicly, not student or employee names.  Additionally, we are required to record this information in Infinite Campus (our student information system).

Please call the Russell County Board of Education Central Office at 270-343-3191 with any questions or contact your child’s school nurse.  On behalf of Russell County Schools, thank you for your advanced cooperation as we all work together to provide the safest learning environment for our students and faculty/staff.

Sincerely,

Michael A. Ford, Superintendent
