APRIL 22, 2020 LETTER TO RUSSELL COUNTY SCHOOLS FAMILIES

April 22, 2020

Dear Russell County Schools Families:

Governor Beshear made the recommendation earlier this week that in-person classes not resume for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.  School districts are now required to reach the 1,062 hours of instruction but not the 170 days of instruction.  What does this mean for Russell County Schools?  The last day of instruction (NTI) for the current school year will be Tuesday, May 12 for students.

Our faculty, staff and administration never imagined that when we ceased in-person classes in the middle of March that students would not be returning for this school year.  I know that I speak for all of our employees when I tell you that we terribly miss our students.  I want to thank EVERYONE for their help, participation and support during these unprecedented times.  With the help of our families, students and faculty/staff, we have been able to maintain strong school/home connections during this extended period of NTI.  We realize there has been and will continue to be increased challenges put on our families; we are all here to support one another.  We need students to finish strong and keep working on their NTI assignments.

End of year school celebrations are milestones for a student’s educational career, especially our graduating seniors.  Russell County High School Principal, Darren Gossage, and his faculty/staff have been exploring several options regarding graduation.  There is a tentative plan in place but we are awaiting approval from the state. We will share additional information as we can.

Your child’s school has been making plans regarding pickup of personal belongings, please pay attention to the messages going out from individual schools and contact your child’s teacher with any questions.  I also want to encourage your family to take advantage of the continued meal offerings at Salem Elementary School, Russell County High School and Jamestown Elementary School 11-12, Monday-Friday.

It is my wish that our families are well and enjoying this extended time with one another.  We are closing the current school year like none other but we remain steadfast in our commitment to be here for our students/families.

With much gratitude,

Michael A. Ford, Superintendent
