Welcome to Second Grade

Welcome to Second Grade!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As the new school year begins I would like to welcome you and your child to second grade. I am looking forward to a year filled with exciting learning activities!  A good learning experience is built on a cooperative effort between parent, teacher, and child.  With all of us working together, this will be a great school year!  Below is some information to help your family as your child begins their second grade journey.

Attendance: Please make sure that your child is on time each day.  A student is considered tardy after 7:20. Each day begins in the gym for morning assembly.  From there we go to our classrooms where instruction will begin promptly.  If your child is late, that means he/she will start the day off behind the other students.

Homework:  A second grade newsletter will be sent home each Monday that contains our spelling words and weekly information. Spelling tests are given every Friday.

Students will also receive a homework packet on Monday that will be due on Friday.

Meals: Like last year, each student will receive free breakfast and lunch.  Please fill out the free lunch form in the information packet!  It is very important that your child pick up a food tray even if they have eaten or brought their lunch.  If students want extras they will need to bring money to purchase these items.

Snacks: Students will be responsible for their own snack this year.   Students may bring a drink from home but Friday will be the only day we purchase pop at school.

Transportation: To ensure your child’s safety, please let me or the office know if there is a change in your child’s regular pick-up or bus schedule (either by phone or note).

Tennis Shoes: Please wear tennis shoes each day for specials, this way your child will be sure to get to participate in whatever activities the specials teachers have planned.  Students may keep tennis shoes in their locker to change into before they go to specials.

How to reach me: If you ever need to speak me or have a question about something, send a note with your child.  You may also e-mail me at school. My e-mail address is andrea.irvin@russell.kyschools.us . If you need to call me during the day at school, the number for the school is 866-3587.

Remind a Text:

Second grade teachers will be sending out reminder text messages for important information to parents who are interested this year. Please make sure your student’s teacher has your correct cell phone number if you want to participate.

I know this is going to be a great year!
