We want to introduce the Gifted/Talented program in Russell County School District to you. As always, we are available for questions. Feel free to email or call, Tracy Adams & Hannah England.
To prospective GT students & parents:
GT is not a club or group you can join. It is an educational service that is provided to you, if you qualify pursuit to 704KAR 3:285. Kentucky formally idenifies gifted students in grades 4-12 in the following areas:
*** General Intellectual: possessing either the potential or demonstrated ability to perform at an exceptionally high level in general intellectual ability and possessing a consistently outstanding mental capacity as compared to children of one’s age, experience, or environment. General intellectual ability is usually reflected in extraordinary performance in a variety of cognitive areas, such as abstract reasoning, social awareness, memory, spatial relations, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of information. A composite score in the 9th stanine is required.
***Specific Academic Aptitude - (Language Arts, Math, Science & Social Studies) possessing either potential or demonstrated ability to perform at an exceptionally high level in specific academic areas significantly beyond the age, experience or environment of one’s chronological peers. While students with specific academic aptitude are typically of at least above average intellectual ability, they are often extremely capable of high performance in one or more related academic area (s). A composite score in the 9th stanine on a nationionally normed referenced test of achievement is required.
***Leadership or Psychosocial Ability - possessing either potential or demonstrated ability to perform at an exceptionally high level in social skills and interpersonal qualities such as poise, effective oral and written expression, managerial ability, and the ability, or vision, to set goals and organize others to successfully reach those goals.
***Visual and Performing Arts Ability - possessing either potential or demonstrated ability to perform at an exceptionally high level in the visual or performing arts and demonstrating the potential for outstanding aesthetic production, accomplishment, or creativity in areas such as art, dance, drama, music.
***Creative and Divergent Thinking Ability - possessing either potential or demonstrated ability to perform at an exceptionally high level in creative thinking and divergent approaches to conventional tasks as evidenced by innovative or creative reasoning, advanced insight and imagination, and solving problems in unique ways.
What is the 7th gradeTalent Search?
The largest program of its kind, participants in the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search identify academic strengths, develop abilities and interests, and celebrate their achievements at a crucial time when they are forming their identities and looking ahead to the future. TIP assists families in determining how advanced their students’ academic abilities are and what level of educational challenge is appropriate.

A Parents Guide to Gifted Children

The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics is a dual-credit residential high school for academically exceptional Kentucky students. The Academy is housed on the campus of Morehead State.
Camp Innovate is a week long day camp designed for advanced ability and high interest children who were in grades four or five during the previous school year. The experience features hands-on and minds-on instruction to engage children in problem solving and learning at advanced levels. Students will explore a wide range of subjects from math and science to art and theater during their day. Registration will be limited to 50 students.
